La tensión post-apocalítica de "</span></span><span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">Whisky Glace" tiene en su saxo indómito una prueba fehaciente, también, de lo que ha llegado a influir el último disco en vida de Bowie, y la canción que da título al álbum hurga más si cabe en consideraciones filosóficas de gran calado (<i>"esta es la causa de nuestros miedos y nuestra esencia: el mal y las flores, la impermanencia, por eso lloramos y bailamos"</i>). En el caso de </span></span><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">"</span><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif; text-align: left;">Brûlèe", donde el folk de cámara de orfebrería fina fija sus cimientos, el atractivo reside en maridar los tonos vocales casi contrapuestos de Stables y Genders y salir más que airoso de la emoción propuesta. El de Genders, más nasal, sobre todo en "Today" parece emparentarse con la solemnidad de un Alan Sparhawk cuando entona ese "my love" comatoso. El universo de Stevie Zita se calibra por el número de canciones buenas que lleva desperdigadas en singles, eps y, ahora, en este primer álbum oficial. Es la quintaesencia de la fórmula sobre la que viene concentrado Zita desde sus orígenes: una guitarra líquida, desvanecida en su intento de hilvanar una textura <i>jangle</i>, recubierta por debajo de un glaseado de sintes psicotrópicos y coronado por una voz aparentemente abúlica. En "Gotham" todo ello se vuelve hasta plañidero y "Pyramid Schemin'" nos envuelve en la sombra alargada de R. Stevie Moore, acertadamente considerado la auténtica autoridad en esta materia de la bajísima fidelidad, dejando para "Ali Baba" el remanente del mejor Sean Nicholas Savage, el que nos embaucó a la altura de "Flamingo". Los que me conocen un poco saben de cierta animadversión por mi parte respecto a esa época. Se vendió como un retorno a determinada autenticidad, en contraposición a la década anterior donde supuestamente solo había primado la fatuidad y el horterismo -ya saben, los clichés de la laca, las hombreras y los sintetizadores puestos a bulto-. Sin embargo, y a riesgo de incurrir en generalizaciones tan apresuradas como esta, la de los noventa fue, salvo un buen puñado de excepciones, una era musical plomiza, tirando a gris, sometida al colesterol sónico y a la asfixiante depresión post-grunge -que inundaron otras corrientes como el trip-hop o el brit-pop-. Si rebobinamos al principio es cuando nos damos de bruces con los noventa: el "Act 1 (The Pilgrim)", que arranca el viaje, parece resucitar los acordes oblícuos -y el <i>spoken word</i>- de Slint, pero como si estos estuvieran un tanto desenchufados. En otras canciones tan sugerentes como "My God" asoman los Mercury Rev más aprovechables, antes de sumirse en el indie-prog de los dosmil: "Broken Ark" o "</span><span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">Gymnopédie" son ejemplos palmarios a este respecto. Todo ello con una fogosidad típicamente británica -Madness o los Dexys Midnight Runners de "</span></span><span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">Too-Rye-Ay" no andan muy lejos-</span></span><span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">, aunque en momentos como "One Fine Specimen" nos recuerde vocalmente más a </span></span><span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">Cathal Coughlan que a cualquier otro bregador de aquel Reino Unido. La primera, con sus escarceos casi ska-pop (como "Subvert") y sus cambios de intensidad es por derecho propio el primer clásico de los de Steve Lake. "War" (remozada luego para el primer álbum), de mensaje elemental pero desgraciadamente más vivo que nunca, advierte sobre el contexto de militarización y paranoia criminal que, en 2024, está tan presente como en el momento de escribirla. Si en 2021 dudaba del acercamiento a texturas más sintéticas por parte de Molly Burch -fue en concreto en la reseña del disco de aquel año de Eve Adams-, el "Draydreamer" (Captured Tracks) de la angelina, que insiste en la misma línea, pero esta vez con una inspiración manifiesta que en "</span><span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">Romantic Images" costaba vislumbrar</span><span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">, me ha hecho recapacitar y terminar rendido a su última apuesta, máxime cuando Burch había debutado con "Please Be Mine", una de las obras mayores del </span><i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">neotradicionalismo</i><span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;"> pop de los últimos lustros.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">Empezando por la producción de Jack Tatum (Wild Nothing): valiente, arrolladora e infecciosa. Es en "Physical", "Baby Watch My Tears Dry" o "2003" donde Molly y Jack apuestan encarecidamente por recrear ese pasado de alguna manera idealizado que nunca vivieron, expresión máxima de aquello que llamamos <i>retrowave </i>y que, al contrario de lo que suele ocurrir con los exponentes habituales del género (muy de canción esporádica realmente atractiva), aquí mantiene un nivel notable en estas tres piezas y a lo largo luego de otros tramos del resto del disco, gracias al más que efectivo talento compositivo de Burch. Es pop electrónico descarado, con guiños al AOR -vertiente new wave- de los ochenta -pero evitando mayormente las guitarras casposas que arruinaban el resultado final en aquella época-. Ni caso: esto es una gozada total que nos reconcilia con la mejor escritura de Molly. Esta vez quizá la canción titular, que apuesta por unas guitarras abiertamente <i>byrdianas</i>, o la robustez eléctrica de "Adrian" marquen unas ligeras novedades -o más bien ampliaciones- respecto a la línea explotada.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">Las letras, como también viene siendo costumbre, subrayan el aquí y ahora entre sencillos alegatos existenciales que empujan tanto al hedonismo -la más descaradamente bailable "Just Think"- como a blindar la fortaleza de la intimidad -"Anything For You", "Better than Ever" o "Is It Really Over?-. "Settoku" y "Honomekashi" (con So!YoON! de SE SO NEON) contienen partes rapeadas, algo que han practicado desde su fundación en 1996, aquí sin arruinar en absoluto la vocación eminentemente pop de estas piezas. Es la canción más sobresaliente </span><span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">del conjunto</span><span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">, o al menos la que más y mejor se queda en una primera escucha. Y también, de alguna manera, la más diferente.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">La cosa se pone más edulcorada </span><span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">aún</span><span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">con "Sunny Days" gracias a la irrupción de unos teclados leves y una fina capa de tonalidades soleadas setenteras. En "Peach Eyes" se suben al carro del </span><i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">revival</i><span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;"> de pop sofisticado californiano tan en boga al menos en el último lustro. Conseguir la melodía efectiva y con encanto incorporando matices refinados y audaces. "Sem Necessidade" -con Tagua Tagua, curtido en un bedroom r&b que cualquier día puede dar la sorpresa- mezcla con talento el chill-out con el sonido urbano. "Brisa 22"o "Pera Aí" se dotan de una carnalidad inusitada a través de los sintetizadores juguetones que las comandan, y "Noites Tropicais" apuesta como ninguna otra por la estilización formal de los años ochenta.</span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;"><br /></span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">Mahmundi, junto con Duda Beat, es hoy por hoy quien mejor recoge y traslada la idiosincrasia brasileña a la pista de baile (¿hypersamba?), con una clase además con la que en otras latitudes apenas pueden ni soñar: por eso los de aquel país, cuando dan con la clave, son y serán un mundo aparte. Y eso es empezar con algo más que buen pie. La mezcolanza sincera y efectiva entre electrónica sedosa, ritmos ecuatoriales y jazz dulzón se ve colmada por un uso desprejuiciado del saxo alto que los más maledicientes tratarán de alinear con aciagos exponentes del mainstream tipo Kenny G.: no caigamos en esa elemental provocación, porque la sensibilidad de Oilly Wallace le exculpa y aleja manifiestamente de semejante comparación.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">Otro plato fuerte de esta grabación, que no renuncia al intercalado con instrumentales, es la versión del "Arrivederci" de Umberto Bindi y Chet Baker que se popularizara a través de la voz del segundo. Wickers, dedicado fundamentalmente a las labores de asistente de dirección (sobre todo para la Hammer: "Taste the Blood of Dracula", "Blood from the Mummy's Tomb" o "Scars of Dracula"), llegó a ponerse al frente de "The Lake" (cortometraje, 1978) y "The Appointment" más bien por razones azarosas, pero en ambos casos dejó una impronta muy particular que, poco a poco, empieza a ser reconocida al menos en cierto <i>fandom</i>, en base a una apuesta decidida por un cine que hurga entre el fantástico más sutil y el terror psicológico menos pirotécnico.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">En "The Lake" Vickers ya incluyó algunos de los presupuestos alusivos que desarrollará con más osadía en "The Appointment": sonidos incidentales que recuerdan lo que pasó en lugares ora abandonados ora invadidos por espíritus acechantes y un ritmo pausado a la hora de rodar -pero jamás tedioso o reiterativo-. Por no hablar de alegorías recurrentes como los perros -ya sean víctimas o presencias amenazantes- y los relojes -que se retrasan, se paran o avanzan de manera descontrolada, imprimiendo con sus desajustes una sensación de irrealidad rayana en lo imperceptible-. Incluso en ese mismo corto había espacio, e</span><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">n el apartado de hallazgos anticipatorios, para una secuencia que recordaba poderosamente a otra de la primera "Friday the 13th", la de Sean S. Música que, en el resto del metraje, cuenta con la partitura de Trevor Jones ("Excalibur", "</span><span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">The Dark Crystal", "</span></span><span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">Labyrinth"</span></span><span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">), lo</span></span><span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;"> que a su vez conecta con el lado del </span><i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">fantastique</i><span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;"> sobre el que oscila parcialmente esta cinta a medio camino entre una road movie y una atmósfera de gótico post-industrial.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">Años antes ha desaparecido en circunstancias extrañas otra alumna del mismo colegio, por lo que Vickers se va a dedicar a jugar al despiste -al menos al principio- entre ese primer acontecimiento y la historia de aparente frustración de esta familia de clase media inglesa, sugiriendo una explicación más mundana. En realidad el problema reside en unas fuerzas invisibles que operan sobre los acontecimientos, en el transcurrir cotidiano y sobre esa frontera entre la realidad y lo onírico. Después de un par de álbumes bastante discretos y convencionales -carentes de la suficiente personalidad, vaya- en la pasada década, Russo abría la actual probando una serie de canciones sueltas con un estilo diferente, marcadamente de bedroom-pop, dando mayor protagonismo a sintes evanescentes (cierta tendencia al vaporwave), a la sensualidad juvenil exacerbada y al <i>autotune</i> diletante. La primera de estas muestras, "Espresso", con su falsete pertinaz, ya destacaba sobremanera dentro del improvisado conjunto.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, serif;">La cosa, aun así, se empezó a poner seria con su siguiente lp oficial, "Lasagne" (Nice Guys, 2021), con sus estribillos alborozadamente apesadumbrados y su smooth r&b, certificando la concreción de su apuesta. Tres años después se confirma que es una de las más extraordinarias canciones de lo que llevamos de década, un clásico en un mundo improbable. La influencia nipona -del city pop al shibuya-kei- se impregna de todo el disco, seguramente por culpa de la inclusión de la relectura del "Baby blue" -en clave lovers rock- de los tokiotas Fishmans: menos pulcra que la original pero realmente oportuna y esclarecedora.
